Old Street Bak Kut Teh (老街肉骨茶)~ A small Bak Kut Teh restaurant at Funan DigitaLife Mall. What is "Bak Kut Teh"? You can literally translate it to "Meat Bone Tea". It is a chinese soup with Key Ingredient - Pork Ribs. Ironically, There is no tea inside in the soup but more of drinking chinese tea along with the dish. Basically, pork ribs are simmered with different variety herbs or spices (depends on the style). Some are more Herbalish and some are more Pepperish. So it greatly depends on your preference. I love both!
The restaurant is split to 2 sections (upper level and lower level). I reach about slightly before 12 pm on a weekday and it was already nearly full house. I grabbed the last available table. The place is brightly lit with nostalgic decor.
The ordering system is efficient. Simply just place your order using the iPad. This removes the issue of having to wait for the service staff to serve you. It is so convenient. Gone are the worries on whether the staff taken down the correct order. The staff can just focus on serving the dishes. After ordering, the dishes were swiftly served. The dry Bak Kut Teh took a while longer than the rest of the dishes. I guess it is not like the rest of the dishes that are already ready to serve. They also check with us frequently whether we need more soup.
We ordered a set meal B.
It come with the Premium Loin Ribs Soup, You Tiao (Fried Doughstick), Bean Curd and Rice. We also ordered pig stomach soup and mee sua soup. The You Tiao is very big but unfortunately not warm enough. I dipped it in the soup to soak up the goodness into the dough-stick. The soup came oozing out when you bite through it. So satisfied!
Look at the Loin Ribs! So Big and Meaty! It has a good balance between the fats and meat. It is deliciously tender. The soup is not too pepperish to overwhelm the flavours from the spices and meat. Very Flavourful!
Dry Bak Kut Teh. Dry version of the Pork Ribs Soup. This is my first try for the dry version. Sound ironic. Dry Pork Ribs Soup. I guess they just simply use similar ingredient and stir-fried them. It comes with a dark brown gravy with a hint of spiciness. The Pork Ribs were also very tender and delicious. The white rice complements it totally. It would be too saltish if you eat it alone.
We have ordered the following
  • Set Meal B (Premium Loin Ribs)
  • Pig Stomach Soup
  • Soya Bean Milk
  • Mee Sua Soup
  • Dry Bak Kut Teh
The total bill was about $32 (~S$16 per pax). We had 2 adults. They have a few branches (Funan DigitaLife Mall, Upper Paya Lebar, West Gate and Kallang Wave Mall). I have only went to the Funan DigitaLife Mall. It is convenient and within walking distance to the City Hall Mrt Station. I love that the Loin Ribs soup is neither too pepperish nor too herbalish. It goes down well with my taste buds. It is very subjective. It boils down to your own preference.
