Pepenero~ A stylish elegant dining place with retro touches. Recently, Pepenero on Stanley Street has been acquired by Executive Chef / Owner Gabriele Piegaia who also owns one of my favourite restaurants - Burlamacco. Gabriele has also retained the name of the restaurant while he breathed a fresh new life into it. I thought it is a very nice gesture to continue to preserve the name after acquiring the restaurant. Love the ambience. An amazingly ingenious retro ambience. Interesting the antiques that were displayed are still operational! Wow thought they were just for display only. Love the chair they use too. It gave a elegantly chic touch to the place. The red color chairs brightens the restaurant with a cheery air. Isn't the gramaphone amazing piece of art? We were brought swiftly to our seats after they check our booking. They also offer to help to split my pasta into 2 separate portions. However, I had to decline as I wanted to take a more realistic picture for my readers. They were quick to clear our dishes when we finished and ask whether they can serve the dessert. The pace of serving the dishes are also just nice for me. There are restaurants who rushed to serve every dish end up stressing customers out to quickly finish the dish but not able to slowly appreciate the dish. Peperno_650_5

Complimentary Bread. I noticed that it is the same bread that is also used in Burlamacco. They are also generous with it as they ask whether we want to top up. There are restaurants that will charge you for additional portion when they serve you more bread.

Polpette - Baked Pork Meat Ball cooked in Spicy Tomato Sauce & Mozzarella Cheese~ A treasure hidden under the red sea. The light and juicy Meat Balls together with the spicy tomato sauce is so delicious and flavourful.

Granchio - Crab Meat Cake Served with Avocado in Garlic Aioli~ It is such a colorful dish. Immediately look so appetising. At first, we thought the crab meat cake look dry. But we were wrong~ It actually taste deliciously moist and crunchily crispy on the outside. The winner of the night for me~

Spaghetti - Black Squid Ink Spaghetti Pasta Served with Crab Meat in a spicy tomato and basil sauce~ The silky black pasta together with the red tomato sauce gave a great color contrast. It always like so cool to eat elegant Black Noodles. Like so exotic~ I always love tomato based pasta as it is very refreshing with the hint of spicy and sourness from the tomato.

Ossobuco - Braised Veal Shank "Ossobuco" Served With Mashed Potatoes, Rosemary and Lemon Gremolata~ I understand that Ossobuco is a Milanese speciality of braised veal shank together with vegetables, wine and broth. I had never had such a dish before. The veal shank is seasoned nicely and quite tender.

Dessert time~ Semifreddo - Frozen Zabaglione Souffle served with Amaretto sauce~ Our first thought was Panna Cotta but mystery solved when I cut through it. It was a semi-frozen zabaglione souffle. Amaretto is a sweet, almond-flavoured liqueur. A liqueur sauce with very soft hints of alcohol that hardly can be tasted. Interesting. The semi-frozen Zabaglione Souffle felt like eating ice cream. My friend find it too sweet but I got a sweet tooth so I love it. Haha~ Together with the lovely red strawberries, it actually balanced out the sweetness in the dessert!

Pepenero is a elegantly chic and fun restaurant which is a great place for meeting up with friends and an casual dining date with hints of nostalgic in the air. Love the modern retro ambience!~ The dishes are great especially for the appetizers. I am totally in love with the Polpette - Baked Pork Meat Ball and Granchio - Crab Meat Cake.
